The preliminary stages of a project involve mainly the management team and software architects. The communication channels of choice are phone conferences, chat, email and fax. Face to face discussions are common at this stage. Any important aspects arising from these discussions are thoroughly documented and carefully filed for later use. Special care is granted to clarifying any misunderstandings that might arise.

After the project onset communication takes place among an increased number of people, which include team leaders and developers.
